The Positive Culture Initiative (PCI) started as a project sponsored by the Department of Developmental Disabilities and the Governor’s Office to improve the lives of people with disabilities in Ohio. Today, PCI is an invitation to anyone who cares about someone affected by a disability to take an honest look at how they are approaching those relationships. It is a chance to ask if the “culture” (the atmosphere, the way people treat one another) where people with disabilities live and work is nurturing, accepting and affirming for everyone, participants and staff alike. Through facilitated conversations, we are learning together how to create these kinds of cultures and environments. This will change our approach to support for all of us, particularly those who may sometimes have troubling responses to their environment. In the Positive Culture Initiative, our focus is building good lives by forming relationships and cultivating environments to be supportive, respectful and kind. We look forward to sharing news from this journey as our work unfolds.
